Absurdistan
Reportedly based on a true story (though with quite a bit of legendary embellishment, one assumes, at least in its more fantastical elements), “Absurdistan” takes place in a remote village where the women wage a full-fledged battle-of-the-sexes, agreeing to withhold their conjugal duties until the men in the community repair the pipe that for decades has brought water to the town. The story also features Tamelko (Max Mauff) and Aya (Kristyna Malerova) as two teenagers whose own plans to finally consummate their relationship must now be put on hold.Homespun in appearance and humanistic in tone, “Absurdistan” (a German film done in Russian) is highly reminiscent of those quirky Czech comedies that enjoyed such popularity here in the States back in the 1960s. The scenes set in the past have been deliberately designed to look like aging home movies - grainy, washed-out, and scratchy - while those set in the present are crisp, clean and bursting with color.The movie blends small town humor with touches of magic realism and the occasional flight of fancy. There are times, admittedly, when the movie gets a little too silly and cutesy for its own good, but, on the positive side, it never takes itself too seriously or condescends to its characters. The mood is upbeat and the details charming in what amounts to a modern-day (but not TOO modern-day) version of “Lysistrata.”

Let me get one thing straight. There are very few movies I won’t sit through. No amount of shock or horror or immorality or amorality or even cheesiness will deter me. Practically the only thing that will is poor film making. The type that is lazy and bland. Mostly I manage to avoid these type of thing by never watching videos with Vince Vaughan but once in a while you let your guard down. I could claim it was Billy Bob but it was probably Winona. What can i say? I am weak.This film has nothing to offer and nothing to say. The bass monotone of the soundtrack that washes over the disparate and poorly written open 15-20 minutes tries to imply a threatening atmosphere of doom or something but you cannot imply meaning without there being meaning. There was more to the eighties than bad hair and depeche mode. We already know that blonde people are shallow and sex without love is a meaningless experience (”but as meaningless experiences go its one of…..”).Films are difficult to make. But there are a few simple rules that will help. Establish character and motivation. Give the audience something to care about or at least intrigue them with something unfamiliar and new. Don’t pretend you have said something when you haven’t yet. Try to earn the respect of the audience with good dialogue. Multi-layered narratives can work but weak trivial garbage on top of trivial garbage is still … well you can work it out.Of course i might be wrong. Some people seemed to like it. But then a lot of people thought shoulder pads were a good idea. And some still do.

The Crew
I really do dream of a better time for British cinema. This film is a glimpse of what could be. This film like all good movies focus’ on a good story line, actors in roles they suit and a good pace for its style. A simmering tension through the main characters crumbling self confidence. The edge comes from some brutal violence thrown into boil. Added with the right taste, again for the type of movie it is. Along with a dash of hot lez action, a couple of twists and a quintessential scouse feel. Usually i think scousers get a bad representation as comedy or annoying characters but this time everyone one had a natural feel to them. In summary i would highly recommend it to any man and their dog, especially the dog.

Murder Loves Killers Too
This movie is great if you are into the camp of the 80’s slasher movies. It’s got a humorous twist on the conventional form but is loaded with dialog that fits the genre as well as if it’d come out of an old Friday the 13th movie. The acting is very much in line with the bulk of 80’s slashers but the lead girl is solid and has a great scream. The killer, hope that doesn’t spoil anything, but there’s a killer, pulls off the part with a funny deadpan take. The movie is scary in places, but the character keeps it pretty funny throughout. It’s obviously a budget movie, but the camera work is sharp and there are some cool panning long takes and well orchestrated shots. Overall, I give it a 10 for the genre. Good entertainment.
