True Blood: Season 1: Episode 6

This series has to be one of the greatest fantasy adventures ever brought to television. It is a viewing narcotic and certainly has its’ devoted fan base. Plenty of sexual situations (some pretty kinky).

Apparitions

This is a very odd series that requires a lot of you as a viewer. My guess is that most will not make it through all six episodes. That is a pity, because “Apparitions” is not a TV series with sequential episodes but one long story, told in six parts. And, taken as what it is, it’s one of the best such stories ever told.I don’t much *like* the kind of story it is, but I understand it. It’s *very* much like William Peter Blatty’s “The Exorcist” and “The Ninth Configuration.” Those were Catholic stories, too, about the question of faith, and the questioning of faith. But all three fall into a genre I would call “religious emotional drama queen fiction.” That genre is about writers trying to manipulate audiences by showing them over-the-top miracle and possession stories to push their buttons and get them to associate those pushed emotional buttons with having had some kind of religious epiphany.Ordinary life and ordinary questioning of faith aren’t *enough* for these writers. They have to “paint large,” and can seemingly only believe in God or attempt to sway others into believing in God by creating larger-than-life situations based in conflict between good and evil, personified as a conflict between the man of faith and Satan. Such stories are IMO the spiritual equivalent of sappy romance fiction and manipulative emotional tearjerkers. There is little about them that could be described as “subtle.” That said, I think that “Apparitions” is pretty *good* religious emotional drama queen fiction. It is FAR better than Blatty’s “The Exorcist,” and FAR more intelligent. The cast is excellent and the writing more so. But it’s still religion dressed up like Carmen Miranda. I prefer subtler stuff.

The Poker House

In tone, “The Poker House” most closely resembles Sofia Coppola’s “The Virgin Suicides,” favoring emotionally steeped impressions over a linear plot. Though auds may sense the rape scene lurking near the end, Petty avoids the tension-plucking of a made-for-TV exploitation pic. Instead, the story unfolds as a sequence of semi-hypnotic vignettes set over a 24-hour period in 1976 on the rough side of Council Bluffs, Iowa.Petty relies on heavy narration from Jennifer Lawrence, who plays her 14-year-old proxy, Agnes as a cross between basketball-playing tomboy and bookworm, substitute mother and bright-eyed dreamer.As the title suggests, Agnes lives in a highly unsavory environment for children, a run-down house where neighborhood black men come for drinking, gambling and fuck. Her own mother, Sarah (played as a makeup-smeared, coke-snorting caricature by Selma Blair), is one of two prostitutes, turning tricks while her daughters plug their ears upstairs.The movie yearns for the lost naivete that allowed the girls to see past their circumstances, with Petty attempting to capture the ephemeral feelings that defined her youth. Middle child Bee (Sophia Bairley) rises at the break of dawn and sets out on her paper route; she winds up at the corner drugstore, trading glass bottles for pocket change. Baby Cammie (Chloe Grace Moretz) sleeps over at a neighbor’s house and spends the day at the local bar, eating goldfish crackers among drunks.As for Agnes, she beams when Duval (Bokeem Woodbine) pays her attention, stealing kisses from him in the kitchen, yet oblivious to the sexual dimension of her flirtations. Woodbine exudes the magnetism and danger that might ensnare such a vulnerable young thing.Petty herself remains offscreen, but assembles an impressive cast to re-create her childhood. Though the screenplay, co-written by David Alan Grier (who reserves a hilarious supporting role for himself), never points it out directly, Agnes and her sisters are frequently the only white people among their African-American peers. The characters all speak in the stilted style of an over-earnest stage play, in stark contrast to the subtle, texture-oriented attention the pic gives to nonverbal details.

Jude Law: Tank Top Taut!

A very buff-looking Jude Law drops off his kids at ex-wife Sadie Frost’s West London home on Tuesday (June 30).The 36-year-old British actor will head to Broadway for 12 weeks following Hamlet’s sold-out run at the Wydham’s Theatre. The play will open at the Broadhurst Theater on October 6th, with previews starting from September 12. Jude will finish up in London on August 22.

The L Word: Season 6

I was excited to learn of the new Lesbian drama to come out last January as a new Showtime original series. Already being a enormous fan of QAF I was interested in seeing a show focused primarily on gay women instead of gay men. I believe Showtime made a good choice bringing “The L Word” to its viewers because it now balances out for both gay and lesbian individuals. Although I watched QAF I always felt I had not a lot to relate to. Mel and Lindsey are two great characters but the show does not focus a lot on them. “The L Word’ fills that void. Each character brings new life to the show and the actresses and actors who play them are all very talented and intriguing. With each episode you find yourself more and more captivated and developed into the characters and their lives. It is sometimes frustrating having to wait a whole week just to find out what will happen next. This is without a doubt my Favorite show and I am so happy to finally have something to watch and be able to identify with to some degree. My life is really nothing like what is presented in the show, but it is fiction. It is not meant to be like real life. That would be too boring. The show touches base with many serious issues facing gays and lesbians today in our country and at the same time makes you laugh. These women are HOT and SEXY and Alice(Leisha Haley) brings just the right amount of humor to the show. All of the actresses bring such an energy across the screen. They work well together and you can tell they all have fun making each scene. This applies more to Leisha Haley, Kate Moening and Erin Daniels (Alice, Shane and Dana) Every scene which involves the three of them is sure to have you laughing. Bette and Tina (Jennifer Beals)(Laurel Hollowman)do a great job bring their characters to life and it is their characters, I feel, which make the show interesting. Through the season you see their relationship grow and change. Every week I had to watch and see what was going on with them. Jenny and Marina (Mia Kirshner)(Karina Lombard)display the thrill and and fear of two women coming together. I enjoyed watching these two because it reminded me of my own coming out story, watching Jenny go through all of the emotions. Through the first season you see Jenny grow and develop more than any other character. This is a great show and I believe many people can relate.
