Jilly Cooper’s mix of tongue in cheek romance, sex and horses among toffs of Britain is totally implausible and ridiculously OTT but is just ironic enough to work.This TV mini-series of the book loses almost all the irony and doesnt manage to convey the horror that was the marriage of Rupert Campbell ebony (oh lord what a name!) and Helen.The horses were stunningly gorgeous and all the riding was very well filmed. The actors themselves werent that bad, they did the job. Their main problem was that they just werent good looking enough to live up to their descriptions in the book. Rupert acted the part, but just wasnt convincing as the man no woman could resist, and Jake Lovell was the poshest gypsy I’ve ever seen! Helen needed to be far thinner and far more beautiful. So now, in a moment of self indulgence I have concocted my dream cast for “Riders”:Rupert Campbell ebony - Jude Law perhaps? Jake Lovell - Colin Farrell (at least he’d be Irish!) Helen Campbell ebony - Debra Messing (from Will and Grace)All in all the book was a lot more entertaining but this mini-series isnt nearly as bad as people say, it just tries to emulate the book.

Synecdoche, New York

In a fit of pretentious grad-school psychobabble I once sarcastically meta-critiqued a fellows students sculpture as being a “simulation of a simulacra” Now looking back at it… I don’t think I knew what I was talking about, or why having crafted a “simulation of a simulacra” would have been a bad thing?After seeing synecdoche new york, I think I now have a tangible example for that expression… and this film is going down as one of my all time favorites! Kaufman & Hoffman are perfect doppelgangers! They certainly complement each other better than Jim Carry, Nicolas Cage or John Malcovich did. Kaufman has illustrated his self-reflexive neurosis in a dark comedic way that has more angst and gravitas than Woody Allen or Michel Gondry. The film was so existential and dark I swear I wanted to cry at the end but was too perplexed. He portrays his life as a play within a play and has created actors to play him self and others to play those playing himself, like a hall of mirrors. There are moments that become so interwoven that even Borges & Baudrillard would have a hard time keeping track of the characters. In certain respects the film reminded me of Shane Carruth’s 2004 film Primer, in which the protagonist has multiplied himself into a stupor that he needed to write his own short term crib-notes to figure out what to do next. If you haven’t yet seen it .. run don’t walk.

The Broken

“The Brken” does have its moments. The atmosphere is eerie throughout. The stage design is sparse and somewhat bleak, which is fitting with the flick’s general theme.The problem is that there is too little story here. The writer/director Sean Ellis tries to solve this problem with short intercut scenes and unsettling video. At first it works and you’re intrigued, but at some point it just seems as if Ellis was beating a dead horse. It’s like: “Yeah, we’ve seen these flashbacks, now could you PLEASE go on with the story.”And what is the story anyway? We never find out. Why is there a psychiatrist in the flick? Why are the characters introduced so long, when their relations never amount to anything?”The Brken” seems like an underdevelopped idea and the ending is rather predictable. It’s not a complete waste of time, but in the end it’s pretty much pointless.
